Foil-Stamped vs. Full-Color Printed Matchboxes
Two finishes cover most custom matchbox orders: metallic foil stamping and full-color printing. They produce very different objects. Here’s how to choose.
Side by side
| Foil stamping | Full-color print | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Metallic, tactile, luxe | Photographic, vivid, flexible |
| Best on | Matte dark or kraft boxes | White or light boxes |
| Colors | One foil (gold, silver, copper, rose) | Unlimited, gradients, photos |
| Feel | Pressed, slightly debossed | Smooth, flat |
| Cost | Higher (die + foil) | Lower at volume |
When foil wins
Foil is the move for a logo-forward, premium look — a monogram in gold on a matte black box, a wordmark in copper on kraft. It catches candlelight, feels pressed under the thumb, and reads “expensive” instantly. It’s ideal for weddings, luxury retail, and hospitality where the object is part of the impression. The tradeoff is one metallic color and a die cost.
When full-color wins
If your brand needs specific colors, a gradient, an illustration, or a photo, full-color printing is the only way to get there — and it’s more economical at higher volumes. It’s the right call for candle-brand packaging, bar promos, and any design that can’t be reduced to a single foil hit.
You can have both
Many premium boxes combine them: full-color print for an illustration or pattern, with a foil logo stamped on top. It costs more, but it’s the most striking option — and we’ll show it on the mockup so you can judge before committing.
Foil for a metallic, pressed, premium logo on dark or kraft boxes; full-color for vivid, multi-color, or photographic designs on light boxes. Combine them for the highest-end look.
